WXXI Arts InFocus – Hitch & Cord

MACRAME DOESN’T NECESSARILY COME TO MIND
WHEN YOU THINK, FINE ART. BUT YOU’D BE WRONG IF YOU THOUGHT IT DIDN’T
FIT RIGHT IN WITH PAINTING, DRAWING, SCULPTING AND THE MANY OTHER MEDIUMS ARTISTS USE. JUST LOOK AT THE DETAIL AND CREATIVITY THAT
GOES INTO ONE OF HITCH AND CORDS DECORATIVE WALL HANGINGS. (Laura Seymour) Macrame is essentially knotting,
it’s all different kinds of knots put together to make different designs. I make modern macramé pieces, wall hangings,
banners, a limited line of jewelry, and I do that all out of my home studio here in
Rochester, NY. I
follow a lot of home décor blogs and home stores on social media, that really was how
I came across this resurgence of macrame. The new look to it, I was totally obsessed
with it. I’ve always been a supporter of local artists
so I wanted some for my house, and I tried to find someone who was doing it and I couldn’t
find anybody. I ended up going to the library and I got
books from the 1970s and I taught myself from those books. It was a slow process, you know, learning
all the knots and it kind of progressed from there. I really just loved it, I started more and
more pieces. Each wall hanging really starts at the beach. I source all my driftwood locally so I go
down to the beaches all around here and collect all the driftwood. Once I have all the driftwood home I clean
it all, I sand it down, from there it’s just all about figuring out what I want the
piece to look like. I don’t follow any pattern, all my designs
are original. I would say I definitely am a bit of an ocd
type of person when it comes to my knotting. I think that’s why I prefer to use a natural
cotton rope even, because you can get really tight knots. I know when I’m buying something handmade
from somebody, I want to know that they put a lot of effort into it and they took their
time. I do the same when I’m taking my pieces. UIf a knot doesn’t look right then I’m
taking that knot out because I want that piece to be perfect, essentially, especially if
it’s going to somebody and they’re going to be putting it in their home. It’s taken me years to get to this point. Each piece I make is different, each piece
I make is better, so I’m constantly learning, constantly improving, so the pieces I’m
making are not a hobby, they’re more of a high art, they’re something for somebody’s
home to have in their living room or their bedroom. They become much more than just a craft. YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE BY VISITING HITCH-AND-CORD-DOT-COM
