What Islam really says about women | Alaa Murabit

What Islam really says about women | Alaa Murabit

So on my way here, the passenger next to me and I
had a very interesting conversation during my flight. He told me, “It seems like
the United States has run out of jobs, because they’re just making some up: cat psychologist, dog whisperer,
tornado chaser.” A couple of seconds later, he asked me, “So what do you do?” And I was like, “Peacebuilder?” (Laughter) Every day, I work to amplify
the voices of women and to highlight their experiences and their participation in peace
processes and conflict resolution, and because of my work, I recognize that the only way to ensure
the full participation of women globally is by reclaiming religion. Now, this matter is vitally
important to me. As a young Muslim woman,
I am very proud of my faith. It gives me the strength and conviction
to do my work every day. It’s the reason I can be here
in front of you. But I can’t overlook the damage that has
been done in the name of religion, not just my own, but all
of the world’s major faiths. The misrepresentation and misuse
and manipulation of religious scripture has influenced our social
and cultural norms, our laws, our daily lives, to a point where we sometimes
don’t recognize it. My parents moved from Libya,
North Africa, to Canada in the early 1980s, and I am the middle child of 11 children. Yes, 11. But growing up, I saw my parents, both religiously devout
and spiritual people, pray and praise God for their blessings, namely me of course, but among others.
(Laughter) They were kind and funny and patient, limitlessly patient, the kind of patience
that having 11 kids forces you to have. And they were fair. I was never subjected to religion
through a cultural lens. I was treated the same, the same was expected of me. I was never taught that God
judged differently based on gender. And my parents’ understanding of God
as a merciful and beneficial friend and provider shaped the way
I looked at the world. Now, of course, my upbringing
had additional benefits. Being one of 11 children is Diplomacy 101.
(Laughter) To this day, I am asked
where I went to school, like, “Did you go to
Kennedy School of Government?” and I look at them and I’m like, “No, I went to the Murabit School
of International Affairs.” It’s extremely exclusive. You would have
to talk to my mom to get in. Lucky for you, she’s here. But being one of 11 children
and having 10 siblings teaches you a lot about
power structures and alliances. It teaches you focus; you have
to talk fast or say less, because you will always get cut off. It teaches you the importance
of messaging. You have to ask questions in the right way
to get the answers you know you want, and you have to say no
in the right way to keep the peace. But the most important lesson
I learned growing up was the importance of being at the table. When my mom’s favorite lamp broke,
I had to be there when she was trying to find out how and by who,
because I had to defend myself, because if you’re not,
then the finger is pointed at you, and before you know it,
you will be grounded. I am not speaking
from experience, of course. When I was 15 in 2005,
I completed high school and I moved from Canada — Saskatoon — to Zawiya, my parents’ hometown in Libya, a very traditional city. Mind you, I had only ever been
to Libya before on vacation, and as a seven-year-old girl,
it was magic. It was ice cream and trips to the beach
and really excited relatives. Turns out it’s not the same
as a 15-year-old young lady. I very quickly became introduced
to the cultural aspect of religion. The words “haram” —
meaning religiously prohibited — and “aib” — meaning
culturally inappropriate — were exchanged carelessly, as if they meant the same thing
and had the same consequences. And I found myself in conversation
after conversation with classmates and colleagues, professors,
friends, even relatives, beginning to question my own role
and my own aspirations. And even with the foundation
my parents had provided for me, I found myself questioning
the role of women in my faith. So at the Murabit School
of International Affairs, we go very heavy on the debate, and rule number one is do your research,
so that’s what I did, and it surprised me how easy it was to find women in my faith
who were leaders, who were innovative, who were strong — politically, economically,
even militarily. Khadija financed the Islamic movement in its infancy. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her. So why weren’t we learning about her? Why weren’t we learning about these women? Why were women being relegated
to positions which predated the teachings of our faith? And why, if we are equal
in the eyes of God, are we not equal in the eyes of men? To me, it all came back to the lessons
I had learned as a child. The decision maker, the person
who gets to control the message, is sitting at the table, and unfortunately,
in every single world faith, they are not women. Religious institutions
are dominated by men and driven by male leadership, and they create policies
in their likeness, and until we can change
the system entirely, then we can’t realistically
expect to have full economic and political participation of women. Our foundation is broken. My mom actually says, you can’t build
a straight house on a crooked foundation. In 2011, the Libyan revolution broke out,
and my family was on the front lines. And there’s this amazing thing
that happens in war, a cultural shift almost, very temporary. And it was the first time that I felt
it was not only acceptable for me to be involved,
but it was encouraged. It was demanded. Myself and other women
had a seat at the table. We weren’t holding hands or a medium. We were part of decision making. We were information sharing.
We were crucial. And I wanted and needed
for that change to be permanent. Turns out, that’s not that easy. It only took a few weeks before the women
that I had previously worked with were returning back
to their previous roles, and most of them were driven
by words of encouragement from religious and political leaders, most of whom cited religious scripture
as their defense. It’s how they gained popular support
for their opinions. So initially, I focused on the economic
and political empowerment of women. I thought that would lead
to cultural and social change. It turns out, it does a little,
but not a lot. I decided to use
their defense as my offense, and I began to cite and highlight
Islamic scripture as well. In 2012 and 2013, my organization
led the single largest and most widespread
campaign in Libya. We entered homes and schools
and universities, even mosques. We spoke to 50,000 people directly, and hundreds of thousands more through
billboards and television commercials, radio commercials and posters. And you’re probably wondering how
a women’s rights organization was able to do this in communities
which had previously opposed our sheer existence. I used scripture. I used verses from the Quran
and sayings of the Prophet, Hadiths, his sayings which
are, for example, “The best of you is the best
to their family.” “Do not let your brother oppress another.” For the first time, Friday sermons
led by local community imams promoted the rights of women. They discussed taboo issues,
like domestic violence. Policies were changed. In certain communities,
we actually had to go as far as saying the International
Human Rights Declaration, which you opposed because it wasn’t
written by religious scholars, well, those same principles
are in our book. So really, the United Nations
just copied us. By changing the message,
we were able to provide an alternative narrative which promoted
the rights of women in Libya. It’s something that has now
been replicated internationally, and while I am not saying it’s easy —
believe me, it’s not. Liberals will say you’re using religion
and call you a bad conservative. Conservatives will call you
a lot of colorful things. I’ve heard everything from, “Your parents
must be extremely ashamed of you” — false; they’re my biggest fans — to “You will not make it
to your next birthday” — again wrong, because I did. And I remain a very strong believer that women’s rights
and religion are not mutually exclusive. But we have to be at the table. We have to stop giving up our position,
because by remaining silent, we allow for the continued persecution
and abuse of women worldwide. By saying that we’re going
to fight for women’s rights and fight extremism
with bombs and warfare, we completely cripple local societies
which need to address these issues so that they’re sustainable. It is not easy, challenging
distorted religious messaging. You will have your fair share
of insults and ridicule and threats. But we have to do it. We have no other option than to reclaim
the message of human rights, the principles of our faith, not for us, not for
the women in your families, not for the women in this room, not even for the women out there, but for societies
that would be transformed with the participation of women. And the only way we can do that, our only option, is to be, and remain, at the table. Thank you. (Applause)

In Islam woman is half of a man.
Quran (4:11) – (Inheritance) The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females
Quran (2:282) – (Court testimony) And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not found then a man and two women.

Not to mention Muhammed said in Sahih Bukhari (6:301) 'Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?' They replied in the affirmative. He said, 'This is the deficiency in her intelligence.'

    I'm getting mixed messages here.

    "Principals of our religion"
    1) cut of the thieves hand rather than filling it with what they need to survive
    2) Stone the adulteress rather than ask her husband why she would want to be with another man.
    3) 3 witnesses to a womans rape or it didn't happen
    4) Husband may beat thier wives and children
    5) Kill for the ILLUSION of honor
    6) Walk 3 steps behind
    7) Cover yourself and be ashamed and hide from the world
    8) Never shower except in discharge, but dont touch dogs or you will be dirty, torture and murder the black ones(I have to admit… this one makes my blood boil)
    9) Hate and murder all those who do not worship as you do… even if they are of the same faith.
I missed many others but, this is all I can see when you try and make a case for your cult. Just because it's popular doesn't make it right. Just because you think you are right doesn't mean you are. Sure you can say the Jews and catholics are worse… but at least the eat the flesh and drink the blood after murdering, rather than letting it go to waste.
I did read the books.. so yes I do understand. What you fail to understand is EVERYONE with a functioning amgidila is going to not like your way of life because it actually threatens everyone else who does not worship as you do. It threatens thier, wives, daughters, pets and LIVES. The amgidila is going to turn on and say keep them away they are dangerous to myself and those I love. News flash: you actually are. I am not a racist or islamophobe. I have a fully functioning amygdala. Evolution has had it's way with me. I am cool with that. This is not a cult of love and peace because your "extremists" are barbarians. The facts and results speak for themselves. You look at any cult and it all comes down to the effect it has on the brain… more specifically the amygdala(if some intelligent person is reading this with a platform… TAKE IT, IT'S ALL YOURS, the world needs to know) What does the amygdala do when it sees a crusifix? Or reads the story of moses?
It says hey! Dont be like that guy or you will end up just like him!!! Dead or worse… we have been programmed to believe that all life is suffering from the Buddhists as well… when we actually have the means and resources to make it not nearly as bad. And we misuse and abuse those resources for wealth and power of the few rather than the health and good will for everyone. Wake up, you are in the age of information, ignorance is now a grave choice. Take the fucking headscarves off (implimented 50 years ago) and let the wind through your hair and just be happy you are alive and have the choice to walk away and say I am not going to stand behind what this cult does any longer. Trust me, the rest of us who have gotten out of our own chains will be here with open arms.

Name any other religion that had a prophet that slaughtered 6 hundred people in one they. There are good muslim but islam is ruled by the gun/sword, so unfortunately when their number grow to substantial amount like in all other counties they rule the jihadist will take over and the so called moderate muslim will do what their told out of fare. People don't realize that in the last century islam was not always so powerful, but took over majority christian countries that are now majority muslim. All great civilizations fall eventually, we have seen this trough out history. One of the reasons this happens is because the forget their history and allow it to repeat.

She is proud of a faith (islam) that allows Husbands to beat their wives? She is proud of Islam that teaches that homosexuals, adulterers and Muslims leaving Islam must be killed? She is proud of Islam that teaches that womens testimoney in a court of law is worth only half of the testimoney of a Muslim man? Of course the testimony of a Non-Muslim does not count. The same goes for inheritance, a Muslim women gets only half of a male heir, a Non-Muslim heir gets nothing. This is the bases of Islam which according to Islam is given by Allah, so how is she going to change this?

The title of this video is misleading. Talking about woman position in islam should be based on 3 keys:
(1). what quran talked about woman
(2). What muhammad – islam prophet – talked about woman — you may find it in hadith (hadith muslim, bukhari, abu dawood, etc), and..
(3). What the islamic scholars said about woman according to their tafseer.. like written in tafseer of Ibn.Abbas, Kathir, Qurtubi, etc.

  • Sonya Burks says:

Mohammed married a 6 year Old when he was OLD 54 YR old man . & You believe this man can be HOLY? & remember the story of this WIFE He forcibly married after killing her husband & brother because HE WANTED HER!!
Was Mohammed GOOD to his wives? During Muhammad's jihad on the Jews of Khaybar, he took for himself from among the spoils of war one young woman, a teenager, Safiya bint Huyay, after hearing of her beauty. (Earlier the prophet had bestowed her on another Muslim jihadi, but when rumor of her beauty reached him, the prophet reneged and took her for himself.)

Muhammad "married" Safiya hours after he had her husband, Kinana, tortured to death in order to reveal hidden treasure. And before this, the prophet's jihadis slaughtered Safiya's father and brothers.

While Islamic apologists have long tried to justify this account—often by saying that Muhammad gave her the honor of "marriage" as opposed to being a concubine and that she opted to convert to Islam—they habitually fail to cite what Islamic sources record, namely Baladhuri's ninth century Kitab Futuh al-Buldan ("Book of Conquests").

According to this narrative, after the death of Muhammad, Safiya confessed that "Of all men, I hated the prophet the most—for he killed my husband, my brother, and my father," before "marrying" (or, less euphemistically, raping) her.

  • Sonya Burks says:

    "The Messiahs Return"
    Matthew 24:30
    30. Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.[d] 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[e]is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

    The Day and Hour Unknown

36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Okay but in islam, the testimony of a woman is half that of a man, a woman gets half the inheritance that a man would, the quran orders men to beat their wives if they are disobedient, and the prophet consummated marrige with aisha when he was 50 and she was 9. Google 'consummated' if u dont know what that means. And the quran literally says that men are a degree above women.
And dont get me started on the hadith

People need to know that God is light. Let’s look at our human behavior:

    DARK BEHAVIOR (not Godly)
Rape, beheading, cold-blooded murder, spousal abuse, torture, forced facial coverings, pedophilia, fgm, acid attack, burning, halal torture, war “jihad,"Sharia punishments, threats, false accusations, judgmental of others, disrespecting men, disrespecting women, disrespecting children, no consideration for others. Watching people suffer. This is dark. behavior.

    LIGHT BEHAVIOR (God is light)
Love, benevolence, compassion, serenity, light, forgiveness, generosity, honoring all.

    Fix Islam.

    Sahih Muslim

    Book 008, Number 3424:

' A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Sahla bint Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Messenger of Allah, I see on the face of Abu Hudhaifa (signs of disgust) on entering of Salim (who is an ally) into (our house), whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Suckle him. She said: How can I suckle him as he is a grown-up man? Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) smiled and said: I already know that he is a young man. 'Amr has made this addition in his narration that he participated in the Battle of Badr and in the narration of Ibn 'Umar (the words are): Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) laughed.

    Book 008, Number 3425:

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hadhaifa, lived with him and his family in their house. She (i. e. the daughter of Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Salim has attained (puberty) as men attain, and he understands what they understand, and he enters our house freely, I, however, perceive that something (rankles) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa, whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to her: Suckle him and you would become unlawful for him, and (the rankling) which Abu Hudhaifa feels in his heart will disappear. She returned and said: So I suckled him, and what (was there) in the heart of Abu Hudhaifa disappeared.

    Book 008, Number 3427:

Umm Salama said to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her): A young boy who is at the threshold of puberty comes to you. I, however, do not like that he should come to me, whereupon 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: Don't you see in Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) a model for you? She also said: The wife of Abu Hudhaifa said: Messenger of Allah, Salim comes to me and now he is a (grown-up) person, and there is something that (rankles) in the mind of Abu Hudhaifa about him, whereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Suckle him (so that he may become your foster-child), and thus he may be able to come to you (freely).

    Book 008, Number 3428:

Zainab daughter of Abu Salama reported: I heard Umm Salama, the wife of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon himy, saying to 'A'isha: By Allah, I do not like to be seen by a young boy who has passed the period of fosterage, whereupon she ('A'isha) said: Why is it so? Sahla daughter of Suhail came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Allah's Messenger, I swear by Allah that I see in the face of Abu Hudhaifa (the signs of disgust) on account of entering of Salim (in the house), whereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Suckle him. She (Sahla bint Suhail) said: He has a beard. But he (again) said: Suckle him, and it would remove what is there (expression of disgust) on the face of Abu Hudhaifa. She said: (I did that) and, by Allah, I did not see (any sign of disgust) on the face of Abu Hadhaifa.

    Imam Malik’s Muwatta

    Book 30, Number 30.1.8:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Safiyya bint Abi Ubayd told him that Hafsa, umm al-muminin, sent Asim ibn Abdullah ibn Sad to her sister Fatima bint Umar ibn al-Khattab for her to suckle him ten times so that he could come in to see her. She did it, so he used to come in to see her.

    Book 30, Number 30.2.12:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that he was asked about the suckling of an older person. He said, ''Urwa ibn az-Zubayr informed me that Abu Hudhayfa ibn Utba ibn Rabia, one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who was present at Badr, adopted Salim (who is called Salim, the mawla of Abu Hudhayfa) as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, adopted Zayd ibn Haritha. He thought of him as his son, and Abu Hudhayfa married him to his brother's sister, Fatima bint al-Walid ibn Utba ibn Rabia, who was at that time among the first emigrants. She was one of the best unmarried women of the Quraysh. When Allah the Exalted sent down in His Book what He sent down about Zayd ibn Haritha, 'Call them after their true fathers. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah. If you do not know who their fathers were then they are your brothers in the deen and your mawali,' (Sura 33 ayat 5) people in this position were traced back to their fathers. When the father was not known, they were traced to their mawla.

"Sahla bint Suhayl who was the wife of Abu Hudhayfa, and one of the tribe of Amr ibn Luayy, came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Messenger of Allah! We think of Salim as a son and he comes in to see me while I am uncovered. We only have one room, so what do you think about the situation?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Give him five drinks of your milk and he will be mahram by it.' She then saw him as a foster son. A'isha umm al-muminin took that as a precedent for whatever men she wanted to be able to come to see her. She ordered her sister, Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr as-Siddiq and the daughters of her brother to give milk to whichever men she wanted to be able to come in to see her. The rest of the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, refused to let anyone come in to them by such nursing. They said, 'No! By Allah! We think that what the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered Sahla bint Suhayl to do was only an indulgence concerning the nursing of Salim alone. No! By Allah! No one will come in upon us by such nursing!'

"This is what the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, thought about the suckling of an older person."

    Book 30, Number 30.2.13:

Yahya related to me from Malik that Abdullah ibn Dinar said, "A man came to Abdullah ibn Umar when I was with him at the place where judgments were given and asked him about the suckling of an older person. Abdullah ibn Umar replied, ‘A man came to Umar ibn al-Khattab and said, 'I have a slave-girl and I used to have intercourse with her. My wife went to her and suckled her. When I went to the girl, my wife told me to watch out, because she had suckled her!' Umar told him TO BEAT HIS WIFE and to go to his slave-girl because kinship by suckling was only by the suckling of the young.’"

    Book 30, Number 30.2.14:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that a man said to Abu Musa al-Ashari, "I drank some milk from my wife's breasts and it went into my stomach." Abu Musa said, "I can only but think that she is haram for you." Abdullah ibn Masud said, "Look at what opinion you are giving the man." Abu Musa said, "Then what do you say?" Abdullah ibn Masud said, "There is only kinship by suckling in the first two years."

Abu Musa said, "Do not ask me about anything while this learned man is among you."

    Let us summarize the data.

Muhammad commanded a married woman to nurse her husband’s adopted son, despite the fact that he had reached puberty.

Aisha took this to mean that she could nurse those men that she wanted to have access to.

Aisha advised her sister and nieces to do likewise so as to allow men to enter into them.

Muhammad’s wives spoke out against this practice, claiming that Muhammad commanded this for Sahla alone.

Others such as Umar and Ibn Masud stated that kinship is limited to the nursing of a child for the first two years. After that, the milk becomes only food for the child.

Umar commanded a man to beat his wife for nursing a slave girl with the intention of making that slave girl unlawful for her husband.

Whatever interpretation Aisha, Umar and Ibn Masud may have given to Muhammad's instruction later on (correctly or incorrectly), the fact that Muhammad would command a woman to nurse a young man is shameful and disgusting to say the least.

Keep in mind that military intelligence estimates that of the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, between 15-25% of them are potential jihadists, which means upwards of 350,000,000 of them are loose in and around civilization. When Muslim barbarism occurs – and it occurs every day – no Muslim – none – will step up to criticize or denounce them. The evidence is overwhelming. Therefore, every Muslim, EVERY Muslim, must be removed from every civil society, along with their donkeys and camels, and shipped to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen. Every single Muslim vestige – down to a Muslim pencil – must be removed. Otherwise, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists – non-Muslim, will be – must be according to the Quran (the Muslim manifesto) annihilated.
