Turning my sketch into a Digital Painting!

Turning my sketch into a Digital Painting!

Hey guys, welcome back to Ross Draws and welcome to the Halloween episode! Right, Milo? What? Alright, fine. Here we go- [Magical noises] Woah-ah! Ooh! [Coughing] Alright Milo, how’s that? Oh, Milo?! What?! Turn back into a dog! I miss Milo already Milo, I love you Milo.. Inktober is a very popular art event created by my friend Jake Parker, so I thought it’s very
fitting today if we take one of my Inktober sketches and make it into a
full-blown painting. And surprise, surprise! Ross knows how to draw traditionally! Before Photoshop and digital art and all that jazz, I actually learned how to draw
traditionally with graphite and pens and pencils, color pencils, crayons.. I brought it into Photoshop so this is what we’re going to be painting today. Let’s get started! It’s kind of like a nymph spirit or a dryad with cool butterflies around it with super gold wings. Maybe have a nice quality scanner so you can scan your images in. But our phones these days are super capable of taking amazing photos and you can easily just snap a
picture of your sketch. So what I would do next to start this painting is find a
really cool photo! So I really miss my best friend Milo. Ahh! So I think our cool photo that we’re gonna use is my favorite picture I’ve
ever taken of Milo.. Ahh! My phone wallpaper! Look at that! He’s so cute! So in honor of Milo I think we should use this picture as the base for our painting and we’ll
transform it and paint it into something really cool. It’s Milo! Aww he’s so cute,
it’s my best friend! I miss you buddy. Yeah so we have our sketch here and you
would want to set the layer mode to multiply. Ooohoo and I’m gonna maybe turn this around. So we’re kind of using Milo for
the palette and the base. Move the brush around and try to find
something really cool to play with. Ooo, look at those gold wings. I really like that. So this is what we started with: Milo! and
this what we have. I kind of just used the palette of Milo, Milo’s furs and colors
to kind of get something going. Since this is Halloween I’m gonna make it kind of dark
and a lot of you think all I draw are like pretty girls, very luminous and light, but
I’m gonna make this pretty edgy. So uh yeah!
So maybe really really dark wings.. Because you can easily get lost in kind
of just playing around, right? I think it’s really important that you figure
out your lights! I feel like I want this to be extra dramatic so let’s do a super
nice top lighting. The sketch is kind of like your training
wheels, right? and if you feel like you don’t need it as much anymore I would
kind of drop the opacity on it. Oo that’s kinda pretty. And remember your mask? Boop! So you have your clean selection and I would love to just kind of make a clean
selection of what I have here. Ooh snap and now this is our mask that we could do
anything — oh dang, look at that! I’m just playing with curves right now but we can
literally do anything. Put a more simple background so it’s a lot cleaner. Look how amazing just having a selection is! It makes everything so clear, kind of
sharp, and nicer.. Alright, now we’re getting somewhere! This looks so cool. Look how demonic the horns are. Dang, she looks colordodged already! I feel like this is a really cool representation of my
original sketch. This is a little more beautiful and lighter but we’re trying to
make it a little more edgier, a little more Halloween. I feel like we can add some of this beauty back. I think I’m gonna make some really really beautiful
butterflies. In art we want really contrasting ideas, you know? Something
really maybe dark, edgy, dramatic lighting and then we contrast that with something really soft and beautiful. Since this is all warm, let’s make the butterflies cool
and let’s make them blue! Oooh! Damn, look at that.
Love it! Dude, look at that impact! Warm versus cool. You feel like maybe your
painting is looking a little, like, basic and you want to kind of amp it up? Always think about contrasts between ideas and colors. I feel like we have a really good shape,
we have good contrasting ideas and color, and so I’m just gonna work on it and
I’ll check back soon. I feel like we’re really making some
progress and strides and- huh? Ah! Oh my god! Milo! Buddy I’ma save you, okay?! I feel like
Milo might disappear forever if we don’t try to wrap this up so let’s experiment
a little, you know. Let’s try like a new impact or some other moods. You never
know what direction your painting might head in. I would use command + B for color balance and we have all these sliders of the shadows, the mid-tones, and the
highlights. Oooh! [Gasp] Woah! Now it’s a lot more cooler- Ah! I love that, actually. Look at that! Now
it’s like a whole ‘nother mood- Oh ho, check that out! So this was our
original. It’s kind of like a midnight version. Ooo, this is like a foresty, kind of bioluminescence version. This is like an Instagram version, I feel like there’s like an Instagram filter which still looks super super
cool. I really love to kind of shake my painting up, you know, to see what kind of other moods do I like? I think my final version might have a little bit of
everything? I’m gonna try to finish this up and I’ll check back soon. Yo, butterfly demon lady! Its colordodge time! Oh man —
here we go, here we go- Ohhh!! Milo, your turn! Huh? Huh?! Oh my god- Huh, Milo! Demonic flames! [Gasp] Milo!! I love you Milo! I missed you so much! ..two, three! Look at all these Milos!
