Group Art Project Instructions

Hello class today I wanted to go over what I’m expecting for the group art project so, what you’ll see on the screen right here is a video of Utah Phillips and this is an old powerpoint, so I’m not even sure,, yeah, the media’s not found anymore but what I had done is I had found an old song of Utah Phillips singing about a man he met talking about giving up the weapons of privilege so, in this way, I was sort of using a piece of music and then I interacted that music with a painting now, in this example I’m using a painting that I did where it’s called giving up the weapons of privilege so it’s utilizing the song that talks about giving up the weapons of privilege and this painting that goes along with giving up the weapons of privilege and then there’s the quote from Ammon Hannesy which was covered by Utah Phillips, “You came into the world armed to the teeth with an arsenal of weapons, the weapons of privilege. racial privilege, sexual privilege, economic privilege. If you want to be a pacifist, it’s not just giving up guns and knives and angry words but giving up the weapons of privilege, and going into the world completely disarmed Try that. so, you see, right, there’s a woman, she’s got her hands up it’s a triptych so there’s 3 panels on this left hand side here, you see a king, with a sword and a car and smog producing buildings and on the right hand side, you see a tree, and a burning bush and a desk with an apple on it, and a serpent Interestingly, a lot of people thought that she was Eve but that’s actually a mis-interpretation of the painting that being said, if you were to present on this and say that there’s this religious connotation and this capitalist connotation I would say you’ve made a good argument. alright, so aspects from Sociology we’re looking at this painting showing that school and education are forms of privilege, or a place where inequality is perpetuated and explain how so the idea that school & religion are mechanisms that socialize people to be apart from nature & in this separation we have made what is natural ‘evil’ and advocated the creation of industry wherein we deplete the earth so, you can see I’m talking about consumerism or capitalism. Gender as an aspect of my identity that is placed into the confines of expectation through education and religion do you see how there’s lots of different Sociological ideas that I’m pulling from this? you can say whatever you want as long as you use Sociology “My statement in this piece was to show that I’m taking a stand away from these mechanisms that I was identifying myself with the moon and the ocean, things that have normally been considered feminine so, reclaiming something that is normally dismissed. An artistic statement of the desire to give up my weapons of privilege or, to recognize that I came into the world over-privileged. so these are… and I’m saying ‘my’ because it’s my art piece. so, when you present somebody else’s art piece you’ll say ‘they’ did this, and ‘they’ did this and this is what it represents some of the Sociological theories that I would use when presenting these art pieces would be conflict theory, gender norms deviating, so deviance, deviating from the norm privilege, consumerism, education & inequality How does education promote inequality? when we get to that chapter, you’ll see that there are arguments that say that education, while supposedly it’s supposed to be a tool for equality, it has actually perpetuated inequality in various forms and why do we bring that up? So we can correct it, right. and then religion, as an aspect of what we’re talking about, within society, so 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 7 concepts, right there just from this painting, and this song that go together, by the way this song is interesting, but the quote from the song is right here at the bottom that I really like. and then I’m interacting that with the painting, right. so you can use more than one art piece as long as they kinda go together. so, from this painting you could say all kinds of things. because it’s art, which is subjective and you just need to apply it to Sociology each concept or theory that you utilize needs its own powerpoint page so, this should take 10-15 minutes when presenting I hope this helps, and that you have a fun time!
