DearMKE presents: “HIGH ART” Featuring the Milwaukee Art Center

There I am in the red wig. That was my
first First Stage show. That’s when we met Harry Connick jr.–he’s right there.
We’re going to go to the Milwaukee Youth Art Center, my second home. I got to meet
people like Carlos and Jennifer… This is the commons…We support each other and our endeavors elsewhere and it’s really fun. I love it here. I have really ugly feet. I don’t have pinky toe nails anymore–they’re gone. Well the Youth of America Grand Prix competition is something that every ballet student knows about. It’s very special. I made it to the finals in New York, and I ended up the top 12 out of
the entire world, and one of the top 3 Americans. It was very exciting to hear them say, you know, “Jennifer Hackbarth representing the United States of
America, Milwaukee Ballet School” She was born to dance basically. She’s got it all this one. We really have to nurture this and see how far she can go. I started playing the violin in fifth grade. My dad actually installed tile. So, with a little bit of money from that job, he used
it to pay my tuition. The years after that, I’ve received scholarships to study privately. Today, is rehearsal for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. I made intern for the orchestra working with third and fourth
graders to help them get to where I am today, and to help just inspire them. My
goal is to one day be an arts administrator because I believe that the
arts is something that is vital for a child’s development. “I need the story of how you stop…” I am 17 years old, and I’ve been acting since the first grade. “Don’t be afraid, it’s me…” My favorite part about acting is that I can step into another person’s shoes and just see the world through another person’s eyes. Eighth grade year, I started taking voice lessons from my teacher. [voice exercise] She told me, she’s like, “Erin, you need to
really get this experience at First Stage, it’s the largest professional
children’s theater of its kind in the country.” Because of the opportunities that I
received, I’ve been able to do so much with music here in Milwaukee. Putting on art, sharing it with people, it’s wonderful and so life-giving. Just to dance…on any stage, in front of any audience– I just want to dance and be a ballerina. [clapping]
